The Ocean.

Recently, I’ve been drawn to the ocean. I’ve been watching ocean documentaries and learning about the state of the oceans and all the beautiful creatures that live in the ocean.

There are so many! They are so colourful and beautiful and alive. For now.

I didn’t realize how much of human existence relies on the functioning of the ocean. The ocean absorbs carbon dioxide. This is heating up the ocean and killing the coral. Which in turn, impact hundreds of species of aquatic animals.

I watch these documentaries and know they are trying to bring awareness to the state of the oceans and overfishing and ultimately, the human fate. It’s informational, but humans are so far removed from all this. We’re so removed from nature.

It wasn’t until I started living near the ocean that I really started to connect with it on a personal level. I feel how it is part of my life existence, and in turn, I’m more interested in how I contribute to it’s current state.

I see the ocean ebbing and flowing and I have gotten to know it. I know it when it’s calm, when it’s wavy, in low and high tide. When I sit by the ocean now and the tide starts rising I know it just by hearing the sound of it. I look up and sure enough the waves are almost licking my toes.

Living closer to nature and being in it daily, connecting with it daily, has really shifted the relationship I have with the non-human beings in this world. I appreciate them so much more and in a way the things that we humans have created matter a little less to me.
